Organic, conventional, locally grown and natural – these are all terms consumers hear every day, but do they really understand their meaning? Are consumers making informed purchasing decisions or are they simply making food decisions based on what they hear in popular culture and media?

On Friday, February 21, 2014, join a group of farmers and ranchers, nutritionists and food pundits for a discussion on food production, nutrition and making healthy food choices.  Part of the USDA’s Agricultural Outlook Forum and hosted by the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance® (USFRA®), the in-person and live-streamed Food Dialogues® event “Nutrition: Who’s Shaping America’s Eating Habits?” looks at important issues for consumers and producers.

Carolyn O'Neil, MS, RD, the author of “Slim Down South Cookbook” and a nutrition advisor to BestFoodFacts.org, will moderate a panel that includes:

  • Craig Rowles – Partner and General Manager, Elite Pork Partnership, LLP, Carroll, IA
  • Dennis Derryck – President and Founder, Corbin Hill Farms, New York, NY
  • Jim Call – Farmer, Call Farms, Madison, MN
  • Colette Rihane – Nutrition Guidance and Analysis Division Director, Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, USDA, Washington, DC
  • Roger Clemens – Chief Scientific Officer, Horn and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences, USC School of Pharmacy, Los Angeles, CA
  • Barbara Ruhs – Supermarket Health & Nutrition Expert, Phoenix, AZ

On September 22, 2011, USFRA kicked off the first Food Dialogues® event to bring together different viewpoints on farming and ranching and discuss the future of food.

The Food Dialogues at the Outlook Forum will be the eighth in a series of national town hall-style forums that USFRA has hosted over the past two years. This signature series provides the organization with the vehicle to further the conversation on some of today’s most important issues concerning food.  USFRA consists of more than 80 farmer- and rancher-led organizations and agricultural partners representing virtually all aspects of agriculture, working to engage in dialogue with consumers who have questions about how today’s food is grown and raised.

Watch the live-streamed event, available on FoodDialogues, starting at 10:00 a.m. EST on February 21, 2014.

To attend the Food Dialogues at the Outlook Forum in person, please register for the entire Forum.  In-person attendance for this specific session is limited, and on-site admission is based on a first-come, first-serve basis.
