The Affordable Care Act Supports Small Business

Small businesses are the backbone of this country. They employ nearly half of the workers in rural America and are an integral part of the American economy.

Today, Congress will vote on whether or not to repeal this new law, just as its benefits are beginning to reach rural Americans. Repeal of the health care law would result in higher health insurance costs for thousands of small businesses. We cannot afford to let that happen. Read more »

USDA Rural Development-Iowa and the Small Business Administration take steps to re-establish partnerships with Sac and Fox Tribe

Representatives of USDA Rural Development and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently met with leaders from the Sac and Fox Tribe of Mississippi in Iowa to share information on ways the two federal agencies could assist the tribe with funds for such things as community improvement projects and job-creation and entrepreneurial opportunities. USDA and SBA Team Up for Small Rural Business in Iowa

A participant of an Iowa Business Resource Roundtable. The discussions highlight traditional access to business resources and federal/state funding opportunities as well as learning opportunities for producers, entrepreneurs, and others interested in expanding their role in local food systems.

As I have been discussing Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food with producers and local-food advocates across Iowa, one thing has become quite evident: access to capital is a huge barrier.  In fact, at a meeting last month to develop an Iowa Food and Farm Plan that will be presented to the state legislature, access to traditional financing was listed as a major obstacle.
